Expose, Educate, and Experience Whether it's in the classroom, off campus, or at Central Vermont Career Center (CVCC), our students now have more possibilities than ever to customize their own learning in order to graduate.
With the passing of Act 77, also known as Flexible Pathways, Spaulding High School now offers Work Based Learning (WBL) as a pathway for students to gain the necessary skills to be successful in the workforce. According to the Vermont Agency of Education Work-Based Learning Manual, “WBL creates opportunities for employers and schools to provide structured learning experiences to develop workplace readiness, technical skills and 21st Century Skills. It is a process that allows students to explore careers, connect with businesses, learn about the functions of an organization, and understand the relevance of their education” (p. 10).
Thus Work Based Learning (WBL) creates opportunities for employers and schools to provide structured learning experiences to develop workplace readiness, technical skills, and 21st Century Skills. It is a process that allows students to explore careers, connect with businesses, learn about the functions of an organization, and understand the relevance of their education.

WBL200: Introduction to Work Based Learning |
Even though Work Based Learning opportunities are critical to developing a workforce and act as a flexible pathway for students by helping students become more college/career ready, COVID-19, continues to impact societal norms and programming for Spaulding High School.
For the Fall Semester of 2021, Work Based Learning will be offered in the format of a semester class helping students make clear, informed choices about their futures by learning about the process needed to obtain the skills to be a part of a 21st century workplace. This is especially meaningful for a student who may be interested in exploring a particular career immediately after high school, students who may seek post-secondary education at a technical or community college, or students who are seeking a four year college education. Topics will include Career Readiness, Professionalism, Digital Citizenship, Safety & OSHA, Worker Rights, & Sensitivity in the Workplace. |
WBL300: Work Experience/Internship |

Components of the course include: preparation and professionalism in the workforce, climate and confidentiality, required written assignments, a training agreement, evaluations, and a final product that demonstrates how they have addressed specific learning goals in their training agreement. Prerequisites - Earned Proficiency or higher in WBL 200. A valid driver’s license and access to reliable and insured transportation. In order to obtain full credit, he/she must earn Proficiency based upon the WBL Rubric that is filled out by the WBL Coordinator and the WBL Site Supervisor, along with completing a variety of assignments that meet the standards for his/her WBL Portfolio. |
Additional Program Offerings
Through our WBL relationships within Central Vermont and the state, we are able to offer a series of Employee/Career Panels with organizations, businesses, and post secondary programs, so our students gain a better understanding of their relationship to educational achievement and life-long learning by exploring and researching career clusters and identify career pathways of interest.
